2025 has been a transformative year for my filmmaking, photography, and content creation workflow. After experimenting with various systems over the years, I’ve officially sold off most of my Leica and Lumix gear to return to Fujifilm. This decision wasn’t made lightly, but I’ve rediscovered the versatility and value Fujifilm offers for hybrid creators like myself.
From Leica and Lumix to Fujifilm: Why the Change?
Leica cameras are phenomenal for photography. Their craftsmanship and image quality are second to none. However, their steep price tags and limitations for video work made them less practical for my needs. On the other hand, Lumix cameras excel in video performance but fell short in delivering the tactile and creative experience I crave for photography.
Fujifilm strikes the perfect balance between these two worlds. With the X-T5 and X-H2S, I have found cameras that cater to both my photo and video requirements without breaking the bank.
The Fujifilm X-T5: A Photographer’s Dream
The X-T5 has become my go-to camera for photography. Initially, I overlooked this model, favoring the X100V for its portability and the X-H2S for hybrid work. However, the X-T5’s flexibility and analog-inspired design have won me over. Key features include:
6K video capability: Perfect as a C-camera for my professional projects.
40-megapixel sensor: This provides ample resolution for cropping while maintaining exceptional image quality.
Seven custom modes: These allow me to switch seamlessly between different setups, such as Joe Allen’s cozy chrome Fujifilm JPEG recipe and a black-and-white manual mode which is how I prefer to see the world.
Additionally, the ability to swap lenses, whether modern or vintage, elevates the X-T5 above fixed-lens cameras like the X100V. It’s now my everyday carry for both my casual and professional photography.
The Fujifilm X-H2S: The Hybrid Workhorse
As the camera I’m filming with right now, the X-H2S holds a special place in my workflow. It’s versatile enough to handle everything from YouTube content to high-end production tasks. Here’s why I love it:
Dual card slots: CF-Express B for video and SD for photos, ensuring an organized and efficient workflow.
6K open-gate sensor: This feature allows for flexible cropping and content creation, especially in today’s vertical-video-driven landscape.
ProRes recording: Internal ProRes options provide high-quality footage that’s perfect for social media, YouTube, and more.
Seven custom modes: Again inspired by Joe Allam’s YouTube channel, these presets cater to everything from quick social media shoots to cinematic projects.
Lenses: Affordable Flexibility
One of Fujifilm’s standout qualities is the affordability and versatility of its lens ecosystem. My current setup includes:
23mm f/2: A compact and reliable lens for everyday use.
16-55mm f/2.8 (Version 1): A flexible zoom lens that replaced my Canon 24-70mm.
Viltrox 13mm f/1.4: Perfect for wide-angle shots and vlogging.
Viltrox Speed booster: Great for adapting vintage Leica R lenses for manual focus work and get closer to the full frame look.
This lineup covers everything I need, from street photography to professional video shoots.
Why Fujifilm Over Competitors?
Having used Sony, Canon, and Lumix extensively, I’ve grown to appreciate Fujifilm’s thoughtful design and innovation. While other brands excel in specific areas, Fujifilm offers a unique blend of features that suit hybrid creators like me. Their open-gate recording, customizable modes, and tactile shooting experience set them apart. Plus, they’re constantly improving through firmware updates.
Final Thoughts: It’s About the Story
At the end of the day, your equipment is just a tool. What truly matters is your ability to tell compelling stories. Fujifilm helps me do that by providing a seamless and enjoyable creative experience. Whether I’m shooting a documentary, creating YouTube content, or capturing moments on the streets, this system meets all my needs.
Moving forward, I’ll be sharing more about how I integrate Fujifilm cameras into my workflow alongside my cinema gear. Stay tuned for settings guides, lens reviews, and more.
